Pork can help combat food insecurity

The pork industry is helping combat hunger by curbing an increase of people who are food insecure.

Kevin Rasmussen, past president of the Iowa Pork Producers Association, says pork needs to remain an available and affordable option at the grocery store.

“If we add cost to the producer, which ends up adding cost to the product, then all of a sudden food insecurity increases,” he said Wednesday at the 2023 Iowa Pork Congress in Des Moines. “That is not one of our goals.”

He tells Brownfield pork can be donated to food pantries throughout the US. “We do a great job of giving to the food bank privately and also as an association supporting the local food banks.”

Rasmussen says pork also has a number of nutritional qualities for a healthy diet.
