December poultry production up, led by chicken

U.S. poultry production was up in December.

The USDA says 4.32 billion pounds of poultry were certified as wholesome last month, an increase of 3% on the year.

That was due to a 4% rise in chicken to 3.893 billion pounds because of a higher processing pace and mostly heavier live weights, while canceled out a 3% decline in turkey production to 414.216 million pounds with a slower slaughter rate and mostly lower live weights.

The preliminary 2022 U.S. poultry production total was 52.132 billion pounds, 2% more than 2021, with the final numbers out in April.

The USDA’s next set of annual poultry production projections is out February 8th.
