We Are Commanded to Show Self-Control in Fellowship
2 Peter 1:58 Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, 6 and in your knowledge, self- control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, 7 and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. 8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
We come to the last of the fruits of the Holy Spirit that are produced in God's children - self control. Will we find that this is an exception to the rule we are discovering in this series? Does God produce self control in us but then not command us to be self-controlled in the church? Not at all. Here is Peter, writing to believers and commanding them to apply all diligence to grow in self control, and in many other fruits and gifts where that growth can only be seen in the context of fellowship.
The word used refers to complete mastery over oneself - the ability not to give in to worldly temptations, or to excesses in any activity. In the light of what we have been thinking throughout our consideration of these fruits, we must note again that Christ is our supreme Example, and that to be in a fellowship where this fruit is abundant is a great blessing to the soul.
But let's ponder a moment on how we may grow in these things, and how we may be obedient to these commands. All these fruits are the work of the Holy Spirit, and His influence in us is increased as we use the means of grace. So if you want to exhibit more love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control in your life, you need to be much in prayer, much in the Word, much in the proper use of the Lord's Table and, (curiously enough) much in true fellowship. A true enjoyment and practice of fellowship will help to equip you with more of the fruits you are commanded to manifest in true fellowship! A virtuous circle indeed! And the same goes for obeying all these commands, because the inclination to be quick to obey is strengthened in us by the working of the Holy Spirit!
This goes some way to explaining what Peter is saying in our text. If we possess and are growing in the fruits of the Spirit that he lists, that will mean that we won't be useless or unfruitful in the true knowledge of Christ. And any knowledge of Him that does not yield a harvest of this fruit is likely not to be a true knowledge!
