Shania Twain thought she was 'never going to fall in love again' after ex-husband's affair

Shania Twain has evolving views on heartbreak. 

The country music singer/songwriter, 57, opened up to People magazine in a recent interview about her divorce from her music producer and co-writer Robert "Mutt" Lange after 14 years when she learned he was having an affair with her friend and assistant Marie-Anne Thiébaud. 

"When I got divorced I said, 'I'm never getting married again,' " Twain said. "I was definitely one of those people that could have written a million songs about, 'I'm never going to fall in love again.' " 

But soon after Twain learned from Marie-Anne's husband, former Nestlé exec Frédéric Thiébaud, that Marie-Anne and Lange were having an affair, she formed a friendship with Frédéric and eventually married him in 2011.

"Fred was such an undeniable love," Twain said. "That is a really strong bond that builds over time, that is rare, that you don't have in every relationship if you don't have those deep scars in common. We were a big part of each other's healing."

"There were days I didn’t really care if tomorrow came," Twain told AARP The Magazine in 2020 of her marriage to Lange ending under those circumstances.

"Sometimes I get overwhelmed coping with things, but experience also teaches you how to manage,” she added to AARP. “When you get older, you have so much experience at falling and getting up. You’re not going to stop falling. But you will get better at getting up and brushing yourself off. I believe that. I’ve lived it."

Now, Twain feels she's living a "second honeymoon phase" with her husband as empty-nesters. Twain and Lange share a son, Eja, and Thiébaud has a daughter Johanna, both of whom are 21. And the singer says she's in a "good place" regarding her ex-husband.

"I found peace a long time ago, and maybe peace is forgiveness, you know?" Twain told People. "I'm able to have more appreciation for him again, not for what happened in our marriage but for all that he contributed to such a great part of my career and my life. We have a beautiful child from it. The resentment is gone."
