Why this week's developments may portend the final collapse of Trumpism: analysis

Former President Donald Trump’s week just spiraled further downward with Republican Senate hopeful Herschel Walker's defeat in the Georgia runoff.

Since Walker's loss is now the seventh for Trump-backed gubernatorial Senate candidates, a new analysis is explaining what that suggests for the former president, who appears to be waning in popularity.

CNN's Zachary B. Wolf began with a brief recap of all that has transpired over the last several days. "His family business was convicted Tuesday of criminal tax fraud," Wolf wrote.

He added, "On the same day, his hand-picked candidate lost a winnable Senate race in a red state. The House January 6 committee has decided to make criminal referrals to the Justice Department – possibly of him or his close associates. And his call to terminate the Constitution has once again backed Republicans into a corner."

Wolf also referenced remarks from senior CNN political commentator Scott Jennings who also weighed in with his concerns. “I think Georgia, after this midterm, after what happened in 2020, may be remembered as the state that finally broke Donald Trump,” Jennings said.

“Losing Georgia in the presidential election, losing the Senate race, this is not a state Republicans ought to be losing,” he said.

The CNN analyst also offered his assessment of the impact of Walker's defeat arguing that it "provided another painful reminder for Republicans that their general election losses come when election deniers and Trump allies face general election voters.

Another issue that may arise in the near future is Trump's 2024 presidential run. Although he's announced his intent to run, he remains focused on the past election which has led to issues with maintaining the support and trust of Republican voters. "Instead of focusing on the next election, Trump continues to fixate on his 2020 loss," he wrote.

Trump's reckless behavior and rhetoric are also continuing to cause problems. Wolf noted that Trump's call for the U.S. Constitution to be nixed which has led to more of a divide within the party. With this type of divide, the party will likely find it even more difficult to move forward collectively.
