Star of the West expands wheat pilot

Star of the West is accepting additional acres for its sustainable wheat pilot program next year.

Lisa Woodke tells Brownfield the Sustainable Option Wheat (SOW) program, in partnership with The Nature Conservancy, will grow from 900 acres to more than 2,500 in the Saginaw Bay region.

“Our ultimate goal in year three is to get to 5,000 acres of wheat in this program and there’s definitely availability of acres still yet this year,” she says.

Woodke says growers receive tiered incentives for implementing a minimum of four conservation practices along with online tracking and edge-of-field monitoring.

“We’re currently working with our food customers to see what their appetite is for this wheat and what programs we could put in place in the future,” she explains.

The program will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
