'I didn't come here for second place': House Republican throws a fit over how leadership is chosen

United States Congressman Chip Roy (R-Texas), who is a member of the Freedom Caucus in the House of Representatives, complained in a floor speech on Thursday about how lawmakers select individuals to head their conference.

His address comes a day after House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California) was nominated to succeed Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-California) as speaker in the 118th Congress in January.

Roy, however, supported right-wing Congressman Andy Biggs (R-Arizona) in his challenge to McCarthy. Biggs lost 188-31, but the point was made that McCarthy may have a hard time reaching the critical 218-vote threshold to obtain the coveted gavel – which places its wielder right behind the vice president in the presidential line of succession.

"Stop kissing each other's rear ends asking and begging for some slot on a committee. We didn't come here to be on committees. We didn't come here to get a title. How would ya – the titles around this place!" Roy exclaimed before sarcastically asking, "'Who is in leadership?' Leadership. Isn't leadership something you recognize and follow? It's not something you elect."

Roy appeared to be upset over Biggs' defeat as well as about how House speakers are chosen.

"I didn't come here for second place," he continued. "I didn't come here – I didn't leave my family – I don't say goodbye to my son and my daughter and my wife every Monday and fly up here and spend three, four, five days up here and fly back every week just cause I wanna earn Southwest points."

Users on social media then pondered why Roy is in Washington.
