West Texans report feeling tremors after 5.3 magnitude earthquake near Pecos

People across West Texas and New Mexico were reporting feeling tremors after the United States Geological Survey confirmed a 5.3 magnitude earthquake Wednesday afternoon in the western Permian Basin.

The earthquake was recorded about 3:32 p.m. CST Wednesday northwest of Pecos, according to the USGS. There were no immediate reports of damage.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre reported the depth at 1.24 miles and 91 miles west-southwest of Odessa and around 29 miles west-northwest of Pecos, the El Paso Times reported.

According to Michigan Tech University, earthquakes in the range of 2.5 to 5.4 magnitude are often felt, but only cause minor damage. About 500,000 earthquakes in that range are reported annually around the globe.

The earthquake was also felt in various parts of Texas and New Mexico including El Paso, Midland and Lubbock.
