'McCain Republicans vote too': Liz Cheney and Meghan McCain are savoring Kari Lake’s defeat

On Monday night, November 14 — almost a week after Election Day — a winner was called in Arizona’s nail-biter of a gubernatorial race. Democratic Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs defeated MAGA Republican nominee Kari Lake, a far-right conspiracy theorist and Big Lie promoter who drew a great deal of criticism for running an especially ugly and mean-spirited campaign.

Lake’s antics during the campaign ranged from joking about the recent violent attack on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband Paul Pelosi to telling “McCain Republicans” to “get the hell out” of one of her events. And after the election was called for Hobbs, it didn’t take Lake’s critics long to show up on Twitter and savor her defeat. Many of them have been Democrats, but two conservative Republicans who have had fun trolling Lake are GOP activist Meghan McCain (a former co-host on “The View”) and Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming.

After winning Arizona’s 2022 GOP gubernatorial primary, Lake bragged that she “drove a stake through the heart of the McCain machine.” Lake attacked Meghan McCain’s father, the late Sen. John McCain, as a “loser.” But when Hobbs won the election, McCain had the last laugh. McCain posted a photo of her father next to a photo of Lake, with the word “loser” over the Lake photo. And the next morning, McCain tweeted a National Review article headlined “McCain Republicans Vote Too.”

In that biting article, the National Review’s Isaac Schorr argued that the “losers” in the Arizona GOP weren’t McCain Republicans, but MAGA Republicans like Lake and Blake Masters (who lost to incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly in Arizona’s U.S. Senate race).

Cheney, meanwhile, hasn’t been shy about trolling Lake either. When Lake posted a letter claiming that attacks from Cheney were actually helping her campaign, Cheney sarcastically tweeted, “You’re welcome.”
