Harbor Freight to open new store on Pa. 16

Harbor Freight last week announced it will open a new store this winter near Waynesboro, Pa.

The new tool store will be at 11105 Buchanan Trail East, also known as Pa. 16.

An official opening date will be announced closer to opening, according to a news release from the company.

Construction has begun, using local workers and companies from the Waynesboro area.

"In addition to finding a great location, we were attracted by the availability of great associates in the Waynesboro area, and we look forward to having them join the Harbor Freight team," Trey Feiler, senior vice president of real estate and construction, said in the news release.

The family-owned company started in Southern California in 1977, when 17-year-old Eric Smidt began transforming his father’s small phone sales business into a successful mail order company.

The company opened its first store in 1980. Today, Harbor Freight Tools has over 1,300 stores and 25,000 employees across the country.

Harbor Freight already has stores in Chamberburg and Hagerstown, Md.

Mother-daughter team open 40 West Deli

Across the state line in Maryland, Kathy Angle and her daughter, Ashley Fink, have opened 40 West Deli at 15142 National Pike, near the Hagerstown Speedway.

40 West Deli, which is for carry-out only, offers subs, sandwiches, soups, desserts and other wares. The deli's first official day of business was Oct. 7.

Angle said she and her daughter, both from Clear Spring, have some experience in the food business. They had an online venture for about 18 months before opening the physical location.

"We like to cook," Angle said.

She said the business is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. It is closed Sundays and Mondays.

Sports memorabilia store moves to new home

Duck's Place, a sports memorabilia store in downtown Hagerstown, has moved a few blocks to 138 W. Washington St.

The business, owned by Donald Barnhart, offers jerseys, hats, autographed signs, sports cards and other sports memorabilia.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for noon on Tuesday, Oct. 25, according to a news release from the city's department of community and economic development.

Open house at Beaver Creek

Beaver Creek Inn and Spa at 20432 Beaver Creek Road will host a community open house Saturday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 23, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Activities will include tours, ice cream, hotdogs, sweet treats and light refreshments.

The community includes the 4,000-square-foot Windmill Acre Museum; a vintage train display; the original Beaver Creek School that is now a community event center; and a 1905 home that is now home to Beaver Creek Inn & Spa.

The open house is a day to celebrate the unity among the businesses, according to a news release.
