A Minnesota man who previously insisted that his camper was torched by members of Antifa has admitted that the entire plot was staged, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has confirmed.

According to CNN, court records indicate that 30-year-old Denis Molla, of Brooklyn Center, Minn., has been "indicted by a federal grand jury in July and pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud after being accused of defrauding and attempting to defraud an insurance agency and GoFundMe donors of more than $300,000 following the alleged incident."

In September 2020, Molla had “falsely reported to law enforcement that someone had lit his camper on fire and that three unknown males were near his home when he heard an explosion,” per a news release from the Justice Department.

Around the same time, Molla also spoke publicly about the fire to WCCO. He claimed that he believed the fire had been set as a form of retaliation for the Trump flags in his yard. "These kind of stuff should not happen, especially over beliefs of some sort,” he told WCCO.

On Tuesday, October 11, Molla's attorney Ryan Garry released an emailed statement to CNN sharing his client's regrets for the incident.

“Mr. Molla was obviously remorseful during his federal plea hearing today,” Garry told the news outlet via email. “It’s easy for the general public to look down on him, without knowing what was going on in his life, and cast immediate judgment."

"Mr. Molla is a wonderful husband and father who made a mistake that he sincerely regrets. Unlike many others, he has accepted full responsibility for his actions and is sorry for what happened," Garry said.

Based on the charges listed in Molla's indictment, he faces the possibility of up to 51 months, in addition to a fine and restitution. He will be sentenced at a later date.
