Food safety spotlight: prevent cross-contamination

Food Safety Education Month just came to a close with an emphasis on preventing cross contamination.

Healthy Living:

According to foodsafety.com— which highlights food safety information by the Food Safety and Inspection Service, U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention– cross contamination occurs when harmful germs, including E coli and salmonella, from one food spread to other food items.

Some tips to avoid cross contamination include: separating meat, poultry, and seafood from other food in the shopping cart; keeping these items separate from all other foods in the refrigerator; washing hands for 20 seconds with soap and water after touching raw food; and more.
