CREAATE Act would double USDA export promotion funding

A bill to double support for two USDA export promotion programs has been introduced in the U.S. Senate.

Minnesota Democrat Tina Smith tells Brownfield the Cultivating Revitalization by Expanding American Agricultural Trade and Exports Act (CREAATE Act) would increase annual funding for the Market Access Program to $400 million and bolster the Foreign Market Development Program by more than $34 million.

“The funding for these has really been stagnant for nearly 15 years even though the value of these programs is really great. They’re designed to help producers invest in and get traction in export markets.”

Smith is co-sponsoring the bill with Iowa Republican Joni Ernst and says they’d like to see the CREAATE Act included in the next farm bill.

“In the 2018 Farm Bill I co-sponsored this legislation, so we would be re-authorizing it and getting the doubling in funding which we think is important.”

She says the U.S. needs to keep pace with global competitors that are investing more and more every year in export promotion.
