Ron Johnson called out for missing the mark on key state issues

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wisc.) is facing backlash over the possibility of a government shutdown.

Johnson's colleague, Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D), is launching a new attack against the Republican senator, insisting that he is not in sync with the rest of the state, according to The Hill.

Speaking to reporters this week, the Democratic lawmaker weighed in on Johnson's decision to vote against an initiative that would prevent a government shutdown.

“I want to highlight one thing in particular because my Senate colleague from Wisconsin last night voted against moving forward to fund the government, keep the government open and avoid a needless government shutdown,” Baldwin told reporters.

She went on to reference statements Johnson previously made about other key issues including Medicare and Social Security. According to Baldwin, the Republican lawmaker appears to support the idea of gutting and defunding those programs.

“Senate Republicans like my counterpart from Wisconsin have proposed sunsetting, cutting, and putting Medicare and Social Security on the chopping block with every budget every year,” she said.

The Democratic lawmaker also weighed in on Johnson's opposition to abortion. Baldwin slammed Johnson and the other Wisconsin Republican lawmakers who have “enabled and continue to support taking women back to 1849 … and keeping them there without the right and freedom to make their own personal choices about their body, their health and their family.”

The U.S. Supreme Court's controversial ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade is still a point of contention across the country. In Wisconsin, Johnson's re-election is critical because it could determine whether or not Republican lawmakers will maintain control of the Senate.
