Watch: Tucker Carlson baselessly accuses the United States of sabotaging Russia's Nord Stream Pipelines

Fox News propagandist Tucker Carlson suggested without evidence on Tuesday night that the United States could be behind the suspected sabotage of Russia's Nord Stream Pipelines, which transport Russian gas under the Baltic Sea to Europe and were discovered by its operational engineers to have suffered damage.

"Nord Stream 1 has two leaks northeast of Bornholm," the Danish Defence Command reported on Tuesday, adding that "Nord Stream 2 has one leak south of Dueodde." The agency stressed that "this is not a small crack. It's a really big hole."

Methane was detected spewing from the ruptures, raising concerns about impacts on the environment and energy supplies to nations that rely on Russian fossil fuels.

Common Dreams noted that "President Joe Biden said Nord Stream 2 would not move forward if Russian President Vladimir Putin went through with an attack on Ukraine," which began on February 24th.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stated found it "hard to believe" that the explosions were "accidental," though no potential culprits have been identified.

But Carlson – whose pro-Putin segments are regularly featured on Kremlin state television – blamed the Americans for the purported attack and then proposed several ways that Russia could strike back:

Action has a reaction – equal and opposite. Blow up the Nord Stream Pipelines? Okay, we've entered a new phase, one in which the United States is directly at war with the largest nuclear power in the world.

Doesn't mean it'll go nuclear immediately, but it does suggest there could be consequences. If we actually blew up the Nord Stream Pipelines? Why wouldn't Russia sever undersea internet cables? What would happen if they did that? What would happen if banks in London couldn't communicate with banks in New York? Just that one piece of it, leaving aside its potential effects on our power grid. But let's just say the banks couldn't communicate with each other for one day.

What would the economic effect of that be?

Oh, it would cascade down into your house. We could have an actual collapse. We could very quickly wind up in third-world conditions. Those are the stakes. Have the people behind this, the geniuses like [Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs] Victoria Nuland considered the effects? Maybe they have. Maybe that was the point.
