Ginni Thomas agrees to be be interviewed by Jan. 6 committee: report

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York City has been calling for the impeachment of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas in response to reports that his wife, far-right GOP activist and conspiracy theorist Ginni Thomas, tried to help Donald Trump stay in the White House after he lost the 2020 presidential election. Ginni Thomas’ activism, AOC has argued, presents a major conflict of interest for Justice Thomas.

Although most Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives haven’t gone so far as to call for Justice Thomas’ impeachment, his wife’s post-election activities have caught the attention of the bipartisan January 6 select committee —which wants to question Ginni Thomas. And according to CNN, she has agreed to talk to committee members.

In an article published by CNN’s website on September 22, journalists Jamie Gangel, Ariane de Vogue and Zachary Cohen report, “The House select committee investigating January 6, 2021 has come to an agreement with Ginni Thomas, the conservative activist and wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, to be interviewed by the panel in the coming weeks, according to a source close to the committee. Ginni Thomas’ attorney, Mark Paoletta, confirmed the voluntary interview in a statement, saying, ‘As she has said from the outset, Mrs. Thomas is eager to answer the committee’s questions to clear up any misconceptions about her work relating to the 2020 election. She looks forward to that opportunity.’”

After the 2020 election, Ginni Thomas aggressively promoted the Big Lie and the “Stop the Steal” movement, falsely claiming that the election had been stolen from Trump through widespread voter fraud. But recount after recount in swing states confirmed that now-President Joe Biden won the election fairly. The widespread voter fraud that Ginni Thomas and other MAGA Republicans alleged did not occur.

Gangel, de Vogue and Cohen report, “Members of the panel have long said they are interested in speaking with Thomas, particularly after CNN first reported text messages she exchanged with then-Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows prior to January 6 about overturning the election. But in the months since those messages emerged, there has been little indication that compelling her to testify was a top priority for the panel despite subsequent evidence that Thomas also encouraged state lawmakers in Arizona and Wisconsin to overturn Joe Biden’s legitimate electoral win…. She has also been publicly critical of the House January 6 investigation, calling on House GOP leaders to boot from their conference the two Republicans serving on the select committee.”

Those two Republicans are Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, neither of whom will be in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2023. Cheney was defeated in a GOP congressional primary, removing her from the general election — and Kinzinger decided not to seek reelection.

“The committee has e-mail correspondence between Thomas and former President Donald Trump’s election attorney John Eastman, as well as texts between her and Meadows,” Gangel, de Vogue and Cohen note. “The texts show Thomas urging Meadows to continue the fight to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.”
