This summer, the Independent Sector released the 2022 “Health of the U.S. Nonprofit Sector Quarterly Review,” providing analysis and data of various facets of America’s nonprofit, philanthropy, public policy, advocacy, finance, human capital, governance and trust sectors.
We took a look at some of this year’s insights and here are the highlights:
- In the first quarter of this year, nonprofits contributed $1.4 million to the U.S. economy.
- As of the first quarter of this year, nonprofits added 7.5 percent gross value to the GDP.
- While information has not yet been released for 2022, the report found that dollars donated increased by 11 percent in 2021 over 2019.
- At the end of Q1 of 2022, the total percent of nonprofit workers that made up the U.S. workforce was 6.4 percent, up 1.9 percent since Q4 of 2021.
- In Q1 of 2022, nonprofit employees worked an average of 38.1 hours per week.
- The average age of nonprofit employees at the end of Q1 of 2022 was 43.86 years old.
- The majority of nonprofit employees are female at 67.9 percent in the nonprofit workforce as of Q1 2022. This is up 2.3 percent from 2021.
- Racial and ethnic diversity has been declining in the nonprofit sector, with 77.9 percent of nonprofit employees in the workforce being white as of Q1 of 2022. This is a 2.3 percent increase from Q4 2021.
As the industry continues to reel from the effects of COVID-19, we are continuing to keep tabs on the nonprofit world and the changes – both positive and negative – taking place within it so that we can continue to hone our software to meet the needs of today’s nonprofit.
