Dionne Warwick reintroduces herself as Gladys Knight after US Open announcers mistake the two

People are so focused on Serena Williams' last tennis matches, they aren't sure who is in the stands — even if it's legendary songstress Dionne Warwick. 

During Williams' second US Open match in New York City against No. 2 seed Anett Kontaveit of Estonia Wednesday night cameras panned the arena to see who was in the star-studded crowd. Among the many celebrities, who have come out to support Williams during her last professional matches, was Warwick. 

The announcers, however, served a double fault saying that the "Walk On By" singer was Gladys Knight. 

"Summer of Soul" director Questlove caught the slip-up and posted it on Instagram Wednesday with the caption "Dionne Warwick people!!!!! DIONNE WARWICK!!!!!" 

Warwick, 81, who has a notable presence on social media, jokingly reintroduced herself on Twitter to help the announcers save face, while also calling them out by making puns with both of their discographies.

"Hi, I’m Gladys Knight…," she wrote Thursday. "And instead of taking that midnight train to Georgia, I won’t walk on by but will say a little prayer for you." 

Warwick then posted a cheeky "Throwback Thursday" on Instagram, sharing a black-and-white photo of a young Knight. 

Tony award winner Melba Moore commented on Warwick's post, writing: "Dionne is on a roll today. She looks just like Gladys Knight in this photo."

While both singers are divas of soul music and have collaborated together on several songs and occasions, they are known for different hits. Knight is known as being the frontwoman with The Pips, creating the Grammy-winning song "Midnight Train to Georgia." Warwick has won five Grammys and has had two No. 1 songs on Billboards Top 100. One of the No. 1 songs features Knight as well as Stevie Wonder and Elton John, "That's What Friends Are For."

This isn't the only identity mixup at the 2022 US Open. Social media was in a frenzy Monday night when Laverne Cox was mistaken for Beyoncé. Cox found the moment funny and posted tweets from the error on Instagram. 

"Not me getting mistaken for @Beyonce at the #USOpen tonight then trending on Twitter as the internet cackles over the mistaken identity," Cox posted on Instagram Monday. "These tweets are funny as hell." 

Cox followed up with outfit details that contributed to the mixup, including a Mugler bodysuit which is a designer Beyonce has often worn in the past, on Instagram Tuesday.  As the "Orange is the New Black" star strutted in her tennis spectator outfit on Instagram she played her faux-döppelganger's song "Alien Superstar."
