ESPN broadcaster Dick Vitale announces he is cancer free after a battle with lymphoma

Long-time ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale announced Wednesday that he was cancer free after lengthy battles with lymphoma and melanoma

"Dr Rick Brown just notified me with my results of my major Pet Scan & told me news I wish EVERY cancer patient can hear," Vitale posted Wednesday on his verified Twitter account. "He said 'Dick u have gone from being in remission to being CANCER FREE' ! Thank u to ALL of YOU that have sent me (prayers)."

In August 2021, Vitale, 83, announced that he had beaten melanoma, which had been diagnosed earlier that year. Just two months later, however, Vitale said tests conducted over a three-week period had revealed a lymphoma diagnosis, which appeared to be unrelated to his earlier cancer.

Then, in December, Vitale announced that he would be stepping away from his role at ESPN while he underwent treatment. Eventually, he also underwent a vocal cord surgery that forced him to temporarily lose his voice.

Dick Vitale has been an analyst and champion of college basketball for more than four decades on ESPN.

Vitale has raised more than $50 million for the V Foundation for Cancer Research through his annual Dick Vitale Gala, a fundraiser aimed at research for pediatric cancer.
