Sturgis Rally ends with fewer fatalities than last year, but more DUI arrests

This year's Sturgis Rally ended with fewer fatal crashes, felony drug arrests and overall total citations than the year prior, but an increase in the amount of cash seized and DUI drug arrests.

The rally wrapped up Sunday with a total of three fatal crashes during the eight-day long event. Last year, the rally ended with four, according to a press release from the South Dakota Department of Public Safety. 

Here's a closer look at how things unfolded, based on the final numbers year-to-date released by the department Sunday afternoon:

  • DUI arrests ended with 148 this year, and 122 last year. 
  • Misdemeanor drug arrests ended with 148 this year, compared with 151 last year.
  • Felony drug arrests came in at 103 this year, down from 112 last year.
  • Total citations issued this year were 1,430, down from1,572 last year.
  • Total warnings wrapped up with 5,288, up from 4,319 last year.
  • A total of four vehicles were seized this year, compared with zero last year. Of those four, all were seized because of drug possession.
  • Cash seized came out to $4,335, up from $3,658 last year.
  • Forty-five non-injury crashes occurred this year, down by five last year.
  • There were also 50 injury-related crashes, down from 62 last year.
