USDA: cotton, rice production down on year

The USDA has 2022 cotton and rice production below 2021 levels.

The upland cotton crop is pegged at 12.163 million bales, falling 29% on the year with a higher average yield canceled out by much lower acreage. The average yield for upland cotton is expected to be 837 pounds per acre with harvested area of 6.977 million acres. In 2021, upland cotton production was 17.191 million bales with an average yield of 813 pounds per acre and harvested area of 10.149 million acres.

Old crop cotton ending stocks were reported at 3.5 million bales, up 100,000 from July on lower exports, with new crop at 1.8 million bales, down 600,000 with the huge month to month cut in production against a big drop in exports.

Rice is projected at 176.026 million hundredweight, a drop of 15.77 million on the year due to lower yield and harvested acreage, at 7,627 pounds per acre and 2.308 million acres, respectively. A year ago, rice production totaled 191.796 million hundredweight with an average yield of 7,709 pounds per acre and harvested area of 2.488 million acres.

Old crop U.S. rice ending stocks are pegged at 41.5 million hundredweight, a half a million lower due to decreased imports, with new crop at 36.5 million, a million higher following the month to month increase in production.

Globally, new crop cotton production was down on that lower U.S. crop guess and new crop rice production was cut, mainly on a decrease for India.

The new marketing year for cotton and rice started August 1st.

The USDA’s next set of supply and demand estimates is out September 12th.
