NFU president sees uphill battle on trade front

The president of the National Farmers Union suggests the Biden administration faces an uphill battle on trade.

Rob Larew says the U.S. is still reckoning with the trade war.

“In some ways I would argue that we’re still digging ourselves out of the China debacle. And as we look ahead, now we have the impacts of geopolitical challenges like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and so forth.”

He tells Brownfield trying to create trade agreements while opening new markets is doubly more important and difficult right now.

“I think it’s too tough to say right now exactly what it’s going to look like with all the moving pieces, but it is really encouraging that the administration finally has kind of their team in place and can really get things moving.”

Biden’s nominee for Chief Ag Negotiator, Doug McKalip, is waiting Senate confirmation following hearings late last month.

Brownfield interviewed Larew last week at Minnesota Farmfest.
