Wauseon man indicted on murder, endangering children Tuesday

Devon Harris was charged with murder in the death of 3-year-old Gemma Thompson on Aug. 2. He turned himself in on Aug. 8.

WAUSEON, Ohio — Devon Harris, a Wauseon man who was charged with the murder and felonious assault of 3-year-old Gemma Thompson on Aug. 5, was indicted on those charges and more on Tuesday by a Fulton County grand jury.

Harris was indicted on two counts of endangering children and one count each of murder, involuntary manslaughter and felonious assault after he did not appear at a scheduled court hearing on Tuesday.

An arrest warrant was issued for Harris, 27, on Aug. 5. His whereabouts were unknown until he turned himself in and was booked into the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio, Wauseon police said.

Thompson died as a result of severe injuries that "appeared to be the result of trauma," police said.

Police responded to a report of Thompson having seizures on Aug. 2, when they found her unresponsive. She was first taken to the Fulton County Health Center, then a Toledo hospital, where she was pronounced dead on Aug. 4.

According to court documents, the assault was committed on Aug. 2 and was upgraded to a murder charge on Aug. 4.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the Wauseon Police Department at 419-335-3821.
