Planted area rises for cotton, falls for rice

The USDA says farmers planted more upland cotton acres in 2022 than in 2021 while planting fewer acres of rice.

Upland cotton planting totaled 12.322 million acres, 11% above a year ago, with increases in 16 of the 17 top production states.

Rice planted area totaled 2.343 million acres, 7% less than last year, including a 3% year-to-year decline for long grain rice to 1.905 million and a 21% drop for medium grain to 417,000. Harvested area for all types of rice is projected at 2.308 million acres, compared to 2.488 million in 2021.

The USDA’s next set of supply, demand, and production numbers is out July 12^th.

Year to year comparisons for Brownfield states:

Arkansas: Cotton: Planted: 500,000 acres, compared to 480,000 in 2021; Rice: Planted: 1.151 million acres, compared to 1.211 million a year ago; Harvested: 1.04 million acres, compared to 1.085 million last year

Kansas: Cotton: Planted: 130,000 acres, compared to 110,000 in 2021

Missouri: Cotton: Planted: 380,000 acres, compared to 315,000 in 2021; Rice: Planted: 185,000 acres, compared to 195,000 a year ago; Harvested: 180,000 acres, compared to 195,000 last year

Tennessee: Cotton: Planted: 320,000 acres, compared to 275,000 in 2021
