Bill Nye 'the Science Guy' marries journalist Liza Mundy in DC ceremony, reports say

After years explaining topics on television like how eyes perceive color and the phases of matter, the Emmy-winning television host Bill Nye "The Science Guy" is now demonstrating that love is real.

The American mechanical engineer and TV science communicator married former Washington Post reporter Liza Mundy in late May at the Castle Building's Haupt Garden at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., according to People and photojournalist Pete Souza. 

USA TODAY has reached out to Nye's representative for comment. 

Nye, 66, honored his late father who died in 1997, by wearing cufflinks with small blue stones in the center that belonged to him, according to People. He also wore a black tuxedo with an orange boutonniere, the signature bowtie he donned for most of his television career, photos of the ceremony showed.

Souza, who served as a White House photographer for former President Barack Obama, shared photos from the ceremony on Instagram Wednesday.

"Yes it’s true, I’m now officially a wedding photographer," Souza wrote in the caption.⁣ "But I buried the lede: congrats to Bill Nye and Liza Mundy."

Mundy wore a satin sleeveless dress with a mermaid hemline, train and jeweled belt, according to People.

"Star Trek" alum Robert Picardo, who played “The Doctor,” served as the wedding officiant, according to People. 

The couple, who have kept their relationship mainly private, having only appeared at a few red carpet events united, were joined by loved ones including Mundy's daughter, Anna, Nye's brother, Darby, and his old school friend he’s known for over 50 years, Brian, according to People.

The outlet also reported Nye and Mundy  shared their first dance as a married couple by listening to R&B icon Sam Cooke's rendition of "What a Wonderful World."

In 2017, Mundy mentioned Nye’s mother, cryptanalyst Jacqueline Jenkins-Nye, in her New York Times best selling book “Code Girls: The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers of World War II.” Bill Nye reportedly reached out to Mundy via email and sparked a new romance, People reports.

The two appeared together at the Captain Planet Foundation 30th Anniversary Gala in March and most recently appeared at the premiere of his new Peacock series “The End Is Nye” (streaming Aug. 25) in June.
