CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A woman accused of causing and then leaving the scene of a fatal accident in Calallen has turned herself in to police, Corpus Christi officials confirmed to 3NEWS.
Chelsea Gonzalez, 21, turned herself in to the San Patricio County Sheriff's Office on June 30 after a warrant was issued for her arrest on June 28. Police said Gonzalez was the one who hit David Yates with her car and then left the scene. Yates' body was found in a ditch.
The crash happened on June 22 near Calallen High School. Police were called to the scene just after 6:30 a.m. that morning where they found Yates' body on the ground next to his wheelchair.
Though the crime happened in Nueces County, officials said she will be allowed to bond out from San Patricio County. Her bond is set at $50,000. It is unclear why she turned herself in to San Patricio County officials and not Nueces County officials.
