Vanderburgh County's COVID cases up 12.7%; Indiana cases surge 20.7%

New coronavirus cases leaped in Indiana in the week ending Sunday, rising 20.7% as 8,143 cases were reported. The previous week had 6,749 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Indiana ranked 33rd among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States increased 31.8% from the week before, with 796,108 cases reported. With 2.02% of the country's population, Indiana had 1.02% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 42 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.

Vanderburgh County reported 230 cases and two deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 204 cases and one death. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 58,054 cases and 642 deaths.

Warrick County reported 75 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 67 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 20,495 cases and 239 deaths.

Posey County reported 21 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 19 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 6,601 cases and 58 deaths.

Gibson County reported 37 cases and minus one death in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 34 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 11,779 cases and 144 deaths.

Dubois County reported 16 cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 24 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 12,925 cases and 165 deaths.

Spencer County reported nine cases and zero deaths in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 10 cases and zero deaths. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 5,262 cases and 61 deaths.

Within Indiana, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Owen County with 236 cases per 100,000 per week; Porter County with 193; and Hamilton County with 186. The Centers for Disease Control says high levels of community transmission begin at 100 cases per 100,000 per week.

Adding the most new cases overall were Marion County, with 1,044 cases; Lake County, with 895 cases; and Hamilton County, with 630. Weekly case counts rose in 64 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Marion, Hendricks and Allen counties.

Indiana ranked 46th among states in share of people receiving at least one shot, with 61.5% of its residents at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 77.7%, a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data shows. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are the most used in the United States, require two doses administered a few weeks apart.

In the week ending Wednesday, Indiana reported administering another 38,152 vaccine doses, including 4,746 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 43,295 vaccine doses, including 5,104 first doses. In all, Indiana reported it has administered 9,542,620 total doses.

Across Indiana, cases fell in 25 counties, with the best declines in Monroe County, with 238 cases from 313 a week earlier; in Tippecanoe County, with 355 cases from 397; and in Scott County, with 22 cases from 42.

In Indiana, 45 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 22 people were reported dead.

A total of 1,721,977 people in Indiana have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 23,681 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 83,281,329 people have tested positive and 1,002,173 people have died.

Indiana's COVID-19 hospital admissions rising

Hospitals in 31 states reported more COVID-19 patients than a week earlier, while hospitals in 29 states had more COVID-19 patients in intensive-care beds. Hospitals in 37 states admitted more COVID-19 patients in the latest week than a week prior, the USA TODAY analysis of U.S. Health and Human Services data shows.
