'Blood all over the walls': Trevor Reed offers a harrowing account of Russian detention center

Former U.S. Marine Trevor Reed is sharing details about his harrowing, years-long detainment at a Russian prison.

Reed, who had been held in Russia since 2019, was just released last month. Now he's sat down for an exclusive interview with CNN. Speaking with CNN's Jake Tapper, Reed recalled some of his darkest times in the facility.

Reed, who was housed in the prison's psychiatric treatment facility, revealed some of the most gruesome things he witnessed.

"The psychiatric treatment facility, I was in there with seven other prisoners in a cell. They all had severe, psychological health issues — most of 'em. So over 50% of them in that cell were in there for murder. Or, like, multiple murders, sexual assault and murder — just really disturbed individuals," Reed said.

Reed also noted that the walls were illuminated with blood spatter from those who'd previously committed suicide or murdered fellow inmates.

"There was blood all over the walls there — where prisoners had killed themselves, or killed other prisoners, or attempted to do that," Reed said."And inside of that cell, you know, that was not a good place," he added.

"The toilet's just a hole in the floor" Reed also said, adding, "And there's, you know, crap everywhere, all over the floor, on the walls. There's people in there also that walk around that look like zombies."

Reed admitted that he also feared for his own life.

"You felt they might kill you?" Tapper asked. "Yes. I thought that was a possibility," Reed responded.

Reed's release comes as former marine Paul Whelan, and basketball star and a two-time Olympian, Brittney Griner, are still detained in Russian correctional facilities.

On Thursday, Whelan's brother, David Whelan, released a statement. "Apparently we need to do more because not everyone is onboard with securing Paul's release."
