Good crop emergence reported in eastern Iowa

East-central Iowa farmer Dave Walton says warm temperatures have helped crops emerge.

“First beans we planted are up and the first corn we planted is just poking through,” he said. “As you drive around the countryside, you’re seeing a lot of that early planting stuff pop right out. I think my beans came out in four days this year.”

He tells Brownfield farmers in his area are trying to wrap up planting. “Everybody seemed to get a good week in last week,” Walton said. “The rains that moved through kind of missed us.”

Walton, who farms in Wilton along the Mississippi River, says high diesel prices have been an unexpected challenge this year.
