Eddy County Republicans ahead of Democrats in early absentee voting for June 7 primary

Eddy County Republicans outpaced Democrats in early absentee voting for New Mexico’s June 7 primary, according to the New Mexico Secretary of State’s office.

As of Wednesday, 155 Republicans voted by mail or in person at the Eddy County Clerk’s Office at 325 South Main in Carlsbad or at the Eddy County Sub-Office at 602 South First Street in Artesia, per data from the Secretary of State’s office.

Twenty-eight Democrats either voted by mail or in person during the absentee voting period that started May 10.

Three Republicans and one Democrat took advantage of same day voter registration in Eddy County.

“You can register to vote or update your existing registration and vote on the same day at your County Clerk’s Office,” stated the Secretary of State’s website.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed legislation four years ago giving New Mexicans an option to register to vote through Election Day.

Twenty-eight Republicans and 19 Democrats requested absentee ballots from the Eddy County Clerk’s office as of May 18, per data from the Secretary of State’s office.

Chief Deputy Eddy County Clerk Cara Cooke said Eddy County had 17,849 registered Republicans, 8,930 registered Democrats and 329 registered Libertarians as of May 13.

Early in person voting starts May 21 at 8 a.m. and concludes at 4 p.m., per the Eddy County Bureau of Election’s website.

Early voting continued May 23 through May 27 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and May 28 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., per the County website.

There is no early voting on Memorial Day but polls re-open May 31 through June 3 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The last day to vote early is June 4 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Voting on June 7 runs from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Voters wishing to their voter information or updating their voter registration information can visit the New Mexico Secretary of State’s Voter Information portal or contact the Eddy County Clerk’s Office at 575-885-3383.

Two contested Republican races in Primary

Eddy County Magistrate Judgeships in Division 1 and Division 2 are on the June 7 ballot.

Winners will not have any Democratic opposition in the fall.

Division 1 incumbent Kelly Calicoat was challenged by Toby Austin.

In Division 2, Monica Martinez-Jones challenges Megan Bowen. Current Division 2 Magistrate Judge D’Ann Read opted not to run for another term.
