Wisconsin farmers describe planting progress

More Wisconsin farmers are getting fieldwork done after a week of mostly-good weather.

Amy Penterman and her husband Sander operate Dutch Dairy near Thorp in Clark County.  She tells Brownfield a lot of corn went in last week. “We are very fortunate at our farm. Ten minutes before the rains came through, our custom planter was able to finish up all of our corn, so we have all of our corn in the ground, our winter wheat looks good, and we just have to get our soybeans in the ground.”

Tony Mellenthin grows corn and soybeans in Dunn County near Menomonie. He tells Brownfield, “Our heavy ground here, over the weekend I’d say on Saturday, and it’s working up nicely, planting nicely. Our issue right now is with the low-lying ground, just the water sets in those low spots.”

Mellenthin says he’s over halfway done planting corn and he’s almost halfway through soybean planting, but there’s a ways to go. “We still have over a thousand acres of soybeans to put in but we’re running two planters so we can wipe out quite a few acres in a day.”

Mellenthin says there will be some acres he has to go back to later because they’re too wet right now.
