ME Now Has An Open Primary


Maine Governor Janet Mills (D), allowed Legislation to go into Law, creating an Open Primary, permitting Independent Voters, 32% of All Maine Voters, the right to pick a Party Ballot, and Vote in Primary Elections, for the First time.

350,000 Independent Voters have now been enfranchised and will be able to Vote in Primaries, beginning in 2024.

Open Primaries and Open Primaries Maine, began work on this Issue in 2019.

It took Three years of sustained Advocacy and Public Pressure, to pass this groundbreaking Legislation.

Maine's new law is not an "open primary". It is a semi-closed primary. It is still impossible for a registered Republican to choose a Democratic primary ballot, and vice versa, in Maine.

"Open primary" has been defined in US Supreme Court decisions starting in 1972 as a system in which a voter is free to choose any party's primary ballot. Political science textbooks also define it that way.
