Biofuel leaders see potential in sustainable aviation market

The leaders of two prominent biofuels groups see a lot of potential in the sustainable aviation market.

Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor says she’s excited about the future of sustainable aviation fuels.

“It’s exciting. Now, it’s a long ways away. We are not making that fuel today, not from corn ethanol (but) we have the potential to do that. So our message to policymakers is ‘we’d like to help you get there.”

She tells Brownfield biofuels are a viable solution in aviation, which she calls a “hard to electrify space.”

Renewable Fuels Association CEO Geoff Cooper agrees.

“We think there’s enormous potential with sustainable aviation fuels and a huge opportunity for ethanol. But it’s a longer-term opportunity.”

He says if just half of the 30 billion gallons of aviation fuel used each year in the U.S. were blended with ethanol it would double the market.

Brownfield interviewed Cooper and Skor during the Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit in Des Moines Tuesday.
