Jason Momoa, Lisa Bonet announce split after 16 years together: 'The love between us carries on'

Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet are splitting up after four years of marriage.

The couple announced they are "parting ways in marriage" in a joint statement shared on Momoa's Instagram Wednesday. 

"We have all felt the squeeze and changes of these transformational times," said the couple, who started dating in 2005 and officially tied the knot in October 2017. "A revolution is unfolding ~ and our family is of no exception… feeling and growing from the seismic shifts occurring"

Momoa, 42, and Bonet, 54, added that they chose to announce their split "not because we think it’s newsworthy," but so that "as we go about our lives we may do so with dignity and honesty."

"The love between us carries on, evolving in ways it wishes to be known and lived," the couple continued. "We free each other ~ to be who we are learning to become…"

When asked for comment, a representative for Bonet pointed USA TODAY to Momoa's post.

The couple capped off their statement noting they maintain an "unwavering" devotion to their kids Nakoa-Wolf, 13, and Lola, 14.

While covering the December issue of Men's Health in 2020, Momoa, opened up about being "a mess" while asking Bonet, on a date when he was 26. 

“Especially when you meet someone you’re completely infatuated with and then find out she’s amazing, intelligent, and funny and she’s a goddess and you’re a degenerate," he said in the interview, in which he also offered advice for bachelors looking to "date someone out of their league": "Be you. Try to be funny and make her laugh.”

Momoa said a the time that quarantining with his wife and children had emphasized the importance of family.

“We’ve all gotten so much closer,” he said. “My wife is very sophisticated and smart and (our kids and I are) kind of like animals that need to be trained a little better. I’m constantly a work in progress, and I’ve just been trying to get better as a father and a husband.”

Bonet also shares a daughter, 33-year-old actress Zoë Kravitz, with her former husband, Lenny Kravitz.
