'One of America's darkest days': Stephen Colbert commemorates Jan. 6  anniversary with 'Rent' parody

Stephen Colbert highlighted a bleakly funny parody of Rent" in honor of the insurrection on the U.S. Capitol that occurred on Jan. 6, 2021.

During the Thursday night segment of The Late Show host released a revised version of the famous Rent song, "Seasons of Love" — aptly retitled "Abhor-Rent." The two-minute clip revisited the deadly day in history and offered details on the aftermath with lyrics like, "727 insurrectionists arrested / Who else should be jailed / For this unsuccessful coup? / How about this unsuccessful bum?"

Then a photo of former President Donald Trump appeared. Although Colbert and his writers attempted to take a comical approach to recount the dark day in history, viewers still noted how disturbing the day was.

One YouTube user wrote, "This is heartbreaking and hilarious all at the same time." Another user also noted, "Thank you making me laugh, easing (for now) the anger, frustration, and anxiety that built up while watching today’s coverage."

However, others praised the parody as a brilliant piece of work. "Artistically brilliant!" another YouTube user wrote. "Love the soft melody and the hilarious lyrics, synched to pictures someone spent forever rounding up. Also the boldest political statement CBS ever made. This took balls."
