This post was updated June 15, 2022, to reflect the removal of Microsoft Silverlight as a requirement for the Citrix App Layering management console.

Citrix is continually looking to deliver new features and improvements to Citrix App Layering, bringing a great admin experience in managing applications and images. The Citrix App Layering team is pleased to announce the continued rollout of a new, updated UI to support a modern framework that can be leveraged by the latest browsers and plugins. Citrix App Layering began this process with the rollout of App Layering version 2112 back in Q4 of 2021. With the latest update (Citrix App Layering version 2206) the Citrix team has removed any dependency of Microsoft Silverlight which had reached end of life in Q4 2021. This ensures Citrix App Layering customers will receive new capabilities and a more efficient user experience when leveraging the application.

Citrix has completed the rollout of a two-phased approach toward improvements to the Citrix App Layering management console. Here’s the breakdown of updates:

Phase 1: New layering UI supporting Template and Layer management

We’ve heard your feedback, and with the first phase of this release back in Q4 2021, we introduced value-added features and updates to the new user interface, including:

  • Re-designed login and refreshed UI components without requiring Microsoft Silverlight
  • Complete management of image templates, app layers, and tasks
  • Browser flexibility, enabling you to use any modern browser, such as Chrome, to access this new UI. (Please note, access to the previous Silverlight UI will still need to take place in Internet Explorer.)
  • Elastic layer user assignments

During Phase 1, the new UI temporarily co-existed alongside the existing Silverlight UI on the ELM — each simply requiring a unique URL in your web browser. However, some admin activities outside of image templates and layers still needed to occur in the Silverlight UI. These tasks included applying appliance upgrades, role-based access control (RBAC), AD junction management, and platform connector management. On either interface, the underlying Citrix App Layering UI-driven workflows remained unchanged.

Phase 2: Completion of new UI and removal of Silverlight

We have now completed the final phase of this new rollout (version 2206), which comes equipped with the completed UI and removal of the underlying Silverlight components that it has relied on for its application framework. As we continue our regular releases of Citrix App Layering, we will be gradually rolling out additional enhancements that leverage the new UI to continue to make management even more efficient for admins.
