Adrienne Adams Clinches New York City Council Speaker Race

Adrienne Adams (D-28th District, Queens), will become the Next, New City Council Speaker, after Securing the necessary Voting Commitments Friday, from Sitting and Incoming Council Members.

The Councilwoman announced that she received Promises from 33 of 51 Council Members, who pledged to Vote for her in the Balloting on Jan. 5, 2022. Adams had been locked in a tight Campaign with Councilman Francisco Moya (D-21st District, Queens), an ally of Mayor-Elect Eric Adams (D).

Both Adrienne Adams and Moya stated this week that they had Secured the necessary 26 Votes to become the Next Leader.

Any uncertainty ended Friday, with Adams List of Council Members and their Public Statements supporting her Candidacy. Moya publicly Conceded shortly afterward, and the Mayor-Elect, posted a Statement on Twitter, that said he is “convinced that Adrienne Adams will be the best choice to lead our City Council forward,” after Speaking with Incoming council Members and City Leaders.

Adrienne Adams thanked the Mayor-Elect in a Statement and Returned his Offer of an Olive Branch. “I know we will form a productive partnership to keep New Yorkers safe and turn our city around at this pivotal moment,” she wrote on Twitter.

The Speaker wields a tremendous amount of Power on the Council, choosing Committee Leaderships and Directing the Body’s Legislative Agenda, and is generally considered the Mayor’s Equal when the City’s Executive and Legislative Branches collide.

Adrienne Adams joined the Council in 2017, after spending Decades in the Private Sector. She has served as Queens Community Board 12 Chairwoman, and as a Queens Public Library Trustee. Her 28 years of Private-Sector experience included time at MCI Telecommunications, running her own Childhood Education Consulting Firm, and Training with Goldman Sachs.

She is set to become Only the Third Female Speaker, at a moment when Women make up a Majority of the Council for the First time.

Her historic Candidacy was powered by Support from Moderates including: Councilman Justin Brannan (D-43rd District, Brooklyn) and Democratic Socialists such as Councilwoman Tiffany Cabán (D-22nd District, Queens). She received the backing of both big Labor and Institutional Politicians: The Queens Democratic Party Leader, House Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-5th District), and the Bronx Democratic Party Committee Chair, State Sen. Jamaal Bailey (D-36th District, both backed her Candidacy.

“Our coalition reflects the best of our city,” Adams said in a Statement. “We are ready to come together to solve the enormous challenges we face in order to not just recover from Covid but to build a better, fairer city that works for everyone.”

The Selection of Adams is an early Political Disappointment for the Incoming Mayor, who supported Moya’s Bid and watched as the Largest Labor Groups in the City, and other Speaker Candidates Broke away from Moya, and Supported her Campaign.
