'The Voice' semifinals: Ariana Grande's entire team wiped out in emotional Top 5 reveal

Ariana Grande's season is ending early on "The Voice."

Host Carson Daly said earlier in the competition that each coach was "not guaranteed to have a representative in the finale," and that became a reality for Grande on Tuesday after her lone act in the competition failed to advance to the finale. 

"Tuesday’s are the worst days ever," Grande said in tears when the five finalists were revealed following Monday's semifinal performances. 

That officially ends the newest coach's quest to become the third new coach in the show's history to win their first season. Kelly Clarkson won on her first attempt as coach in 2018 with Brynn Cartelli and John Legend won in 2019 with Maelyn Jarmon.

Blake Shelton, Clarkson and Legend's hopes to win, though, are still alive and well.

Clarkson's team remained intact, with all two of her singers advancing. Shelton is in good shape to repeat as "Voice" champion with two of his three singers moving on. Legend has all of his eggs in one basket with one finalist. 

Here's what happened during Tuesday's elimination: 

Viewers' saves

The four artists with the most viewer votes automatically advanced, in no particular order. 

Team Clarkson’s Girl Named Tom moved on, becoming the first trio in "The Voice" finale. The group is composed of siblings Bekah, Joshua and Caleb. 

America also voted through team member Hailey Mia, the youngest singer in the competition at 14, meaning all two of Clarkson's acts advanced by viewer votes. 

"I never thought I would be here and I’m so honored to be here," Mia said. 

Team Shelton’s Wendy Moten advanced to the finals after leaving both the coaches and America speechless with her rendition of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's  "You're All I Need to Get By." The Tennessean powerhouse, who is rocking casts on both arms after a hard fall last month, said she "didn’t think (she) would make it this far."

Team member Paris Winningham also moved on after his soulful take on Teddy Pendergrass' "Close the Door." He pointed to the sky after he was deemed safe, a signature move for the Florida native. 

Wildcard Instant Save

"Your fifth finalist is going to be decided by our last instant save of the season," host Daly said. 

The four artists who received the fewest votes went head-to-head: Father/son duo Jim and Sasha Allen (Grande), Jershika Maple (Legend), Joshua Vacanti (Legend) and Lana Scott (Shelton).

Scott, the lone country singer in the competition, slowed it down on Lainey Wilson's "Things a Man Oughta Know."

Shelton said her performance "encompasses everything you are good at, which is your storytelling ability." He added, "For God’s sake everybody, put her in the finale. What is going on? Why are we talking about his?"

Daly thought Shelton was on the verge of using a curse word, "I thought we were going to need the delay button on Mr. Shelton."

After choosing to sing a Celine Dion song in the semifinals, Vacanti opted for another Dion classic: "My Heart Will Go On." Legend was out of his seat his entire performance.

"You are just out here slaying Celine Dion, shut up!” Clarkson said. Legend added that Vacanti has "given finale-level performances" the entire competition.

Jim and Sasha Allen appeared to have the time of their lives together on "Rich Girl" by Hall and Oates. 

"I’m a parent so there’s nothing that beats this moment," Clarkson said of the father and son. "To be up on that stage performing."

Grande said it would be "a calamitous mistake not to have you in the finale," adding that their "amazing, unreplaceable, energy" is needed on the show. 

Maple won the Instant Save last week to advance to the Top 8. Can she do it again?

She gave it her all on the gospel anthem "Break Every Chain" by Tasha Cobbs Leonard. She received the only standing ovation of the Instant Save. At the end of her performance, Maple broke down in tears. 

Legend, a preacher's kid who grew up in the church, said Maple's "done it again."

"You brought yourself to tears but you probably brought America to tears," said Legend, whose two artists were in danger of elimination. "I hate that you get put in this position. You don't deserve this." 

In the end, Maple advanced. 

Eliminations

Jim and Sasha Allen (Grande), Joshua Vacanti (Legend) and Lana Scott (Shelton) were eliminated after failing to clinch the Wildcard Instant Save.
