Farmer reports variable crop yields

A Southeastern South Dakota farmer says yields were variable because of a late-season storm that damaged some of his corn.

Kevin Scott, president of the American Soybean Association, says they had about 500 acres of downed corn this fall.

“It took longer to harvest, and it did hurt the yields some. We would have had better than record yields with corn had that not happened,” he says. “But, it was okay, we muddled through, and made it. We may have to deal with some volunteer corn next year in our soybean crop, but we’ll take care of that.”

He tells Brownfield soybean yields were good.

“Soybean wise we had excellent yields,” he says. “There was a pretty severe drought in South Dakota, but we were blessed with a few rains that produced a good crop. We were happy with that, and production was good.”
