Coast Guard calls off search for 94-year-old fisherman reported missing off Galveston coast

U.S. Coast Guard says Frank Marinic set sail almost a week ago. They described him as "a well-known and experienced maritime worker" who was a pillar of Galveston.

GALVESTON, Texas — The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended its search for a 94-year-old fisherman reported missing off the Galveston coast, they said Monday. Coast Guard crews had searched over 3,000 square miles for over 25 search hours.

They said Frank Marinic set sail almost a week ago. He was supposed to return home Saturday, according to friends. His boat was found Saturday with no one on board nearly 90 miles off the Galveston coast, according to officials.

“Since Saturday, our Coast Guard crews, using all available assets, have been putting forth their best effort to find Mr. Marinic, working tirelessly and covering over 3,000 square miles during our search,” said Capt. Keith Donohue, deputy commander of Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston. “Mr. Marinic is a well-known and experienced maritime worker and is also a pillar in the Galveston fishing community. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who know him, during this most difficult time.”

Involved in the search were:

  • Coast Guard Air Station Houston
  • Coast Guard Sector/Air Station Corpus Christi
  • Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile
  • Coast Guard Cutter Hawk
