An alleged chase and shots fired between two vehicles near Roswell led to the lockdown of the city's local Walmart Dec. 2, said Chaves County Sheriff Mike Herrington.

In a Facebook post, Herrington said around 5 p.m. Chaves County Sheriff’s deputies, Roswell Police Department officers and New Mexico State Police responded to an area near the Roswell Walmart at 4500 North Main. The reports indicated occupants in the two vehicles shot at each other.

“It was also reported one of the occupants may have entered Walmart after running away from the scene. Upon arrival law enforcement agencies immediately secured the scene,” he wrote on the social media post.

Herrington said emergency crews provided medical treatment and transported an unknown man who was allegedly shot at a location on West Pine Lodge Road.

He was taken to a Roswell hospital for treatment. The man’s name was not released to the media.

“It was learned during the investigation the altercation started on Devonian Road and came to an end in front of Berrendo Elementary School on West Pine Lodge (Road) after one of the vehicles rammed into the back of the other vehicle causing it to crash,” Herrington wrote.

He said officers and deputies did not discover any other suspects during a check of Walmart and the nearby Sam’s Club and the investigation was ongoing.

Roswell Police spokesman Todd Wildermuth said officers evacuated and locked down the local Walmart Dec. 2 as they searched for the suspects in the shooting.

Despite rumors of an active shooter on social media, Roswell Police said no shooters were inside the store  and no persons were injured.
