Producers made less, paid more in October

The USDA says producers made less and paid more in October than in September.

The index of prices received fell 1.7% on declines for corn, hogs, broiler chickens, and market eggs, which canceled out better returns for milk, sweet corn, lettuce, and broccoli.

The dairy index for October 2021 was up 7.1% from September, but down 1.5% from October 2020. The all-milk price was $19.70 per hundredweight, an increase of $1.30 on the month, but a decrease of $.30 on the year.

The index of prices paid was up 0.8%, with gains for feeder cattle, diesel, supplements, and mixed fertilizer against lower costs for feed grains, complete feed, milk cows, and concentrates.

Year to year, the index of prices received was up 20% from October 2020, while the index of prices paid was 7.9% higher.
