Rep. Lauren Boebert says she called Ilhan Omar and demanded an apology — only to be hung up on

Far-right Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado set off yet another controversy recently when she attacked Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, describing the progressive Minnesota congresswoman — a Muslim and a native of Somalia — as a member of the “Jihad Squad.” When Omar subsequently spoke to Boebert on the phone, she was hoping that Boebert would apologize for her anti-Islam comments; instead, Boebert “doubled down” on them, according to Omar.

Discussing the conversation in an Instagram post that was obviously aimed at her far-right MAGA base, Boebert said of Omar, “She kept asking for a public apology. So, I told Ilhan Omar that she should make a public apology to the American people for her anti-American, anti-Semitic, anti-police rhetoric. She continued to press, and I continued to press back. And then, Rep. Omar hung up on me.”

Boebert added, “Rejecting an apology and then hanging up on someone is part of Cancel Culture 101 and a pillar of the Democrat Party. Make no mistake, I will continue to fearlessly put America first, never sympathizing with terrorists. Unfortunately, Ilhan can’t say the same thing. And our country is worse off for it.”

Omar issued a statement on the conversation as well, stressing that Boebert showed no remorse for her “hurtful” anti-Islam remarks.

The 39-year-old Omar wrote, “Today, I graciously accepted a call from Rep. Lauren Boebert in the hope of receiving a direct apology for falsely claiming she met me in an elevator, suggesting I was a terrorist, and for a history of anti-Muslim hate. Instead of apologizing for her Islamophobic comments and fabricated lies, Rep. Boebert refused to publicly acknowledge her hurtful and dangerous comments. She instead doubled down on her rhetoric, and I decided to end the unproductive call.”

In her statement, the Minnesota congresswoman was not only critical of Boebert, but also, of all the House Republicans who are refusing to call her out.

The Minnesota congresswoman said, “I believe in engaging with those we disagree with respectfully, but not when that disagreement is rooted in outright bigotry and hate. To date, the Republican Party leadership has done nothing to condemn and hold their own members accountable for repeated instances of anti-Muslim hate and harassment. This is not about one hateful statement or one politician; it is about a party that has mainstreamed bigotry and hatred. It is time for Republican Leader McCarthy to actually hold his party accountable.”
