2021 USDA crop condition reports for Illinois end on good note

The USDA has released their final 2021 crop progress and condition reports and Illinois ended on a good note.

As of Sunday, the USDA says 98% of winter wheat planting is complete with 92% of the crop emerged and 82% of the crop in good to excellent condition- the highest condition rating in the past decade for this point in the season.

Corn and soybean harvest data concluded a couple of weeks ago, but Nate Prater, a Golden Harvest agronomist for central and southern Illinois says looking back, 2021 was a pretty good year for both crops.

“For central Illinois and south crops were well above average. Now don’t get me wrong, there were some areas that had excessive water or excessive amounts of tar spot or southern rust, but overall if you ask 90% of the farmers out here their corn yields were well above their APH levels and soybean yields were there as well.”

USDA’s crop progress and condition reports will resume on April 4, 2022.
