2021 Donor-Advised Fund Report: Findings and Takeaways

pexels-rodnae-productions-7414026This week, the National Philanthropic Trust revealed the findings of the 15th annual Donor-Advised Fund Report. This report analyzes donor-advised funds in the U.S., with this year’s analysis also takes into account the donor response to COVID-19. The report looks at data from 2016 to 2020 with data from 976 different charities.

Here are some of the findings from the 2021 report:

  • Grants from donor-advised funds to charities increased by 27 percent over 2019, with grants totaling about $34.67 billion.
  • The number of individual donor-advised funds accounts rose to 1,005,099, a 16.3 percent increase.
  • The payout rate for donor-advised funds in 2020 was 23.8 percent, which is one of the highest payout rates on record.
  • Charitable assets under management in all donor-advised funds increased 9.9 percent over 2019, totaling $159.83 billion.
  • Donor-advised funds contributions in 2020 totaled $47.85 billion, a 20.6 percent increase over 2019.
