NY Onondaga County Will Recount Uncounted Early Votes

New York's Onondaga County, will Recount All Votes Cast, during the Nine-Day Early Voting period, in October, after finding that 802 Ballots were Not Counted in the Final Results.

The Uncounted Ballots could affect about a Dozen Close Races in Manlius, and other Eastern Suburbs of Syracuse, said Dustin Czarny, an Onondaga County Elections Commissioner.

All told, 9,721 Onondaga County Residents Voted from Oct. 23rd to Oct. 31st, at Six Early Voting Sites in the County. The Votes were included with the Election Day Totals reported Nov. 2nd.

But a Routine Recanvassing this week, found 802 of the Early Ballots were Not Counted in Unofficial Election Night Results, because Poll Workers made an Error when they Shut-Down Scanning Machines at the End of the day, Czarny said.

The Errors occurred on Two different Days at the Early Voting site at DeWitt Town Hall, he said, and on One day at the Armond Magnarelli Community Center in Syracuse.

Czarny said the Recanvassing Process this week, caught the Errors, which showed Zero Votes recorded on Three Different days at the Voting Sites.

A Manual Check found 802 Ballots had been Scanned on those days. Those Paper Ballots remain under Secure, Bipartisan Custody, at the Board of Elections.

“All physical ballots are accounted for,” Czarny said. “They’re not missing. This is what the recanvass is designed to do – to catch a human error and fix it.”

After consulting with the New York State Board of Elections, the County decided the most Accurate way to Correct the Count would be to Recount all 9,721 Ballots submitted during the Early Voting period, Czarny said.

The Recount, Overseen by a Bipartisan Team, at the Onondaga County Board of Elections, is due to begin at 9 a.m. Friday. Election Officials plan to work through the Weekend to finish the process.

Even then, the Winners of about 12 Close Election Races, may Not be known until after Absentee Ballots are Counted on Tuesday, Czarny said.

The Elections that are within the Absentee Ballot Margin, include those for Manlius Town Supervisor, Town Board, the County Legislature, and Town Justice.
