With more and more people in search of social distance, safety, and serenity after the onset of COVID-19, it’s no surprise many are fleeing the city and heading to the suburbs. Bethany, Oregon is one of the top ranked suburbs in Oregon on several fronts.

Bethany is an unincorporated community in Washington County with both Beaverton and Portland zip codes. It’s a place where the city, the suburbs, and nature meet. Its draw must be powerful, because it’s seen a significant population increase from 20,646 in 2010, according to the U.S. Census Report to its current population of 26,501.

We’ve looked into Bethany and found five reasons why people are flocking to this desirable, growing Portland suburb.

1. It’s a Nature Lover’s Playground

Bethany is a 16-minute drive northwest of Downtown Portland, yet it’s home to a plethora of parks, greenways, and trails. There, literally, is something for everyone here, no matter age or degree of interest in the great outdoors.

For instance, on the north end of Bethany, Ben Graf Greenway lies within the greenway of the Rock Creek Trail. Abbey Creek Park, also on the north side, is a picnic spot with a playground for kids, and of course, there’s Pirate Park, a large, adventure-style playground with a lookout area and pirate ship on a hilly landscape. Kaiser Woods Natural Area, a 32-acre native forest on the neighborhood’s east side, is loaded with hiking trails. Hansen Ridge Park and Bethany Wetlands Park and several others in between boast a total of 80 miles of hiking and walking trails! Devoted anglers frequent Bethany Lake, a fishing destination in the city that’s stocked with rainbow trout several times each year.

And of course, for those who prefer an upscale version of the great outdoors, Claremont Golf Course offers members nine holes and four sets of trees for various skill levels. Here, you’ll find both locals and golfers from across the region teeing up to sink a few on Claremont’s pristine, manicures grounds.

2. Quality Education is a Priority

Kids in Bethany get their education from the Beaverton School District, one of the largest in the state, ranking in the top 6. Bethany schools are known for their teaching excellence and innovative programs.

In addition to some of the top ranked public schools, Bethany is also home to several specialty and private schools, like Oregon Hope Chinese School, Bethany Village Montessori School, and Bamboo International School. Bethany is also home to Portland Community College’s Rock Creek campus.

3. Quality of Life

Without a doubt, Bethany’s setting and access to nature alone make it a desirable place to live. It also boasts a low crime rate and is known for being one of the safest places to live in the Portland metro area. We also learned that 72.6% of Bethany residents own their own homes. This is likely due to the quality of life they enjoy in Bethany and ease of day-to-day living with ready access to all their needs.

4. Diverse Age Demographics are Welcome

As you can probably tell by now, Bethany, OR is a great place to live, which is why so many call this pocket of the Portland metro area home. It’s also home to professionals who work in Portland proper and at powerhouse employers like Intel and Nike, both a reasonable commute from Bethany.

People of retirement age also love living in Bethany. In fact, Claremont is a planned 55+ resort community of 556 homes for vibrant, active adults that line the edges of Claremont Golf Course.

Diversity here doesn’t stop with age, either. We already knew that Washington County is the most diverse county in Oregon and also contains Oregon’s two most diverse cities—Beaverton and Hillsboro. No wonder it’s Oregon’s most up-and-coming community!

5. Bethany Village Has Everything You Need

Bethany Village is the suburb’s premiere shopping center, packed with a wide variety of retail spaces. Whether you’re looking for a new restaurant to try, clothing, or the perfect gift or toy for an upcoming celebration, you can find it all at Bethany Village. The Bethany shopping center is unlike so many other suburban business centers full of nothing but corporate retail and restaurant chains, there is a thriving group of local business owners that call it home.

The center also has grocery and pharmacy, shipping stores, and cleaners, as well as medical and dental offices, massage therapy, a martial arts academy, and after school programs.
