Wisconsin opens meat processor grant program

Wisconsin’s Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection opened the meat processor grant application window Thursday.

Ag Secretary Randy Romanski says the program allows processors to apply for up to 50-thousand dollars in matching grants.  “It’s getting grant funding out into the hands of processors to expand their operation, add capacity, and it creates an opportunity for modernization and innovation.”

Romanski says the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee recently released the 200-thousand dollars for each of the next two years. “The amount they released to us is 200-thousand dollars over each of the next two years, so that’s not as much money as the Governor initially proposed, the Governor initially proposed a million dollars, and while that 200-thousand is not as much, it’s a start and we’re going to those dollars out the door and try to make investments in the industry.”

Romanski says the grants were one of three things proposed by Governor Tony Evers in his budget, along with additional meat inspectors and a tuition assistance program for new meat processing talent.

The application window will remain open through January 14, 2022.

Applications are due to DATCP Grants Manager Ryan Dunn at ryand.dunn@wisconsin.gov by 5 p.m. on Friday, January 14, 2022. Questions about the grant process can also be directed to Ryan. Grant recipients will be announced in February 2022. The grant application and materials are available at https://datcp.wi.gov/Pages/Growing_WI/MeatAndLivestockDevelopment.aspx
