A storm system front crossing the nation’s mid-section will reach the central Appalachians by Friday before weakening and meandering northeastward. Five-day rainfall totals could reach 1 to 2 inches or more across the eastern half of the country, except in the upper Great Lakes region and across Florida’s peninsula. Some 2- to 4-inch amounts may occur in the middle and northern Atlantic States. In contrast, little or no precipitation will occur during the next 5 days from central and southern California to the southern High Plains. Elsewhere, periodic showers will continue across the Northwest into the weekend, followed by cooler, drier weather. Late in the weekend and early next week, temperatures below 20°F should be common across the northern Plains.
