The stretch of West Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive that ends with the Otero County Detention Center will be renamed Business Center Boulevard.

Otero County Detention Center is the only structure on that part of the newly renamed Business Center Boulevard.

The Alamogordo City Commission unanimously voted to approve the change at their Oct. 26 regular meeting.

"This started originally from a group that approached me (about) the matter of Martin Luther King (Jr. Drive) ending at the jail," Otero County Commission Chairman Gerald Matherly said.

Matherly represents Otero County District 1, which includes the part of Alamogordo where the Otero County Detention Center is located.

Matherly told the group that he would present the proposal to the Otero County Commission which approved the proposal to change.

The Otero County Detention Center opened in April 1998. At the time the address was 1958 Business Center Boulevard, which was the road's name until 2005 when the City of Alamogordo proposed some streets be used as relief routes to connect to South Scenic Drive.

The plan to connect streets to South Scenic Drive would not work, Alamogordo City Manager Brian Cesar said in August.
